*****************FinderFont for System 7***************
Note: If an older FinderFont is already installed, it must be removed first before installing this version. Be sure to read the section on updating older versions.
1) This font is freeware, public domain, so enjoy!
2) This font has been designed for use with System 7 only, to take advantage of the System 7 capability to select a unique font for use in the desktop displays created by the Finder.
3) This font may be given away freely by any commercial or non-commercial organization so long as this “Read Me” file and the “FinderFont 2.1.1” suitcase file are kept together.
******************What is FinderFont?******************
Based upon Geneva 9, FinderFont 9 is a narrowed version of this popular font to help make the Finder labels narrower. Typically each label will be 10 to 20% narrower (especially when using numbers or Caps) and yet still look remarkably like Geneva 9. This font was specially designed to look clear and be easy to read in the Finder.
The FinderFont-Italics 9 has been provided so that the Finder will use it to title alias files. This italics font has been tuned for sharper presentation and better centering. (The System does only a so-so job at guessing at what an italics is supposed to look like.)
First, open the Views control panel and make sure FinderFont is not the selected Font. Choose Geneva 9 if it is. Be sure that all applications have quit before removing FinderFont since System 7 protects applications from Font changes behind the backs of the applications. Then proceed as follows:
FinderFont was not correctly operational with System 7.1, but if it was installed anyway, open the Font folder inside of the System Folder and select all FinderFont files (should be 2), drag them into the trash and empty the trash. Then proceed with installation.
System 7.0.X would contain FinderFont in the System file. Open the System Folder and double click the System file. Select all FinderFont files, drag them into the trash and empty the trash. Then proceed with installation.
Step 1) Hold down the option key and drag the “FinderFont 2.1.1” suitcase file directly into the System Folder and answer affirmative to all question(s). (The option key down forces a copy of the “suitcase” file without erasing the original--a normal occurance if the file is on the same volume as the System Folder.)
Step 2) Open the Control Panel “Views” and select FinderFont from the pop-up menu and choose 9 point for the size.
Step 3) Close and you are done. The Finder will now display the narrower font allowing you to pack your files closer together or to use longer names easily. Now you know why you chose System 7!
Don't worry about selecting the italics font. The Finder selects it automatically for alias use if you have selected FinderFont 9 as the display font.
Updated to Version 2.1.1 on 1/2/93 changing FOND ID to a lower number (2777) to correct a problem with System 7.1 as suggested by Darryl Andrews. System 7.1 Finder was blind to FinderFont when its ID was 27770. This “Read Me file” was also re-written with suggestions from Judd Stiff.
Version 2.1 (12/31/92) was never released except to Beta testing where an experimental ID number of 129 was found to be in conflict with other established font types. Also, a few problems with italics were corrected.
Updated to Version 2.0 on 11/27/92 with changed NFNT ID numbers to avoid conflicts with WORD 5.0 and the Drop Caps feature as reported by Lew Mason. WORD apparently cannot handle negative FONT ID numbers.
Updated to Version 1.1 on 11/8/92 with addition of an alias italics per the suggestion of Mike Epstein.
